A TURNAROUND IN RENO
Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Reno had real cause for celebration
in July of 2013, as it celebrated its one-year anniversary with Prime
Healthcare by holding a country-western themed BBQ with music and activities.
Dr. Reddy spoke to the crowd, mentioning how impressed he was with the
quick growth and transition, and even began to dance when hospital members
broke out in a flash dance they had practiced for his arrival. He noted
that it is the people that make the difference and the compassion that
we show to our patients that will set us apart.
During its first year with Prime Healthcare after being acquired on July
1, 2012, Saint Mary’s made a comeback from the brink of closure.
Due to the funds provided by Prime Healthcare to keep the hospital going,
it climbed out of the red during its first month under new management,
a major accomplishment considering its $43 million loss in 2011.
“We are still Saint Mary’s, but we are the new Saint Mary’s
– still with the traditions, history and care,” said Helen
Lidholm, CEO. “Prime Healthcare saved Saint Mary’s Regional
Medical Center. Had Prime not acquired Saint Mary’s our doors would
be closed and a 107 year legacy all but forgotten.
Due to the changes, admissions are up, patient stays have been reduced
and re-admissions are diminishing. Due to Saint Mary’s strong community
ties, the Dr. Prem Reddy Family Foundation has continued to support many
of the local causes providing affordable care to low-income and uninsured
patients, including Access to Healthcare Network, the Community Triage
Center and the Washoe County School District.
