Caring communication takes on many forms. At Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nevada, it took on the form of a special game of Scrabble.

Nurse Trent had a patient who was incredibly nervous about being in the hospital. Attempting to calm her nerves, Trent pulled up a chair and started talking to her. One of the questions he asked her was, “What is one thing you love to do?” She answered, “I love to play Scrabble.” Trent also happens to be a Scrabble fan. Trent brought in a Scrabble set, asked his patient to set it up and invited her to play a game of Scrabble. Every chance he got, Trent stopped by to check on her and take his turn in Scrabble. They were able to complete their game of Scrabble together.

The patient was so appreciative, and Scrabble game did exactly what Trent hoped; it took his patient’s mind off being in the hospital and helped her relax and heal.
