Desert Valley Hospital is Among Top 5% of Hospitals in Clinical Outcomes in Nation According to Healthgrades

Desert Valley Hospital is a Recipient of Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence

(Victorville, CA – January 20, 2017) – Desert Valley Hospital announced that it has received Healthgrades 2017 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence. The distinction recognizes Desert Valley Hospital as one of the top five percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for its clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

Desert Valley Hospital, a member of Prime Healthcare, is the only hospital in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties to be named “Top 5% in the Country for Overall Clinical Excellence in 2017” and the only hospital in those same counties to receive the “2017 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence” from Healthgrades.

“Receiving this award highlights Desert Valley Hospital’s continued commitment to clinical performance and dedication to excellent patient care. Everyone, from our physicians to our employees and volunteers, makes a difference in the lives of our patients and deserves a thank you for this recognition,” said Fred Hunter, CEO of Desert Valley Hospital and Desert Valley Medical Group.

Desert Valley received the Healthgrades Award for Distinguished Hospital in 2015 and 2016 as well as the Patient Safety Excellence Award in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Desert Valley has also received recognition eight times as a “Top 100 hospital” from Truven Health Analytics.

From 2013 through 2015, patients treated in hospitals receiving Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence had, on average, a 26.2% lower risk of dying (across 19 procedures and conditions where mortality is the clinical outcome), than if they were treated in hospitals that did not achieve this distinction. For example, patients treated at a hospital that achieved the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award had, on average, a 25% lower risk of dying from a stroke than if treated at a hospital that did not achieve this distinction.

During this same period, if all other hospitals performed at the level of Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence across these 19 procedures and conditions, 160,322 lives could potentially have been saved.

“As our first hospital in Prime Healthcare, Desert Valley Hospital continues to provide a leading example of the high standards of quality, compassionate care that all our Prime Healthcare hospitals follow,” said Prem Reddy, MD, Chairman, President & CEO of Prime Healthcare. “I’m proud of the employees, nurses and physicians who go above and beyond for their neighbors in the High Desert every day.”

Desert Valley Hospital is committed to quality improvement. Some initiatives include a focus on reducing harm (such as infections, patient falls, and adverse drug events), reducing readmissions, enhancing quality of communication and service through new information technology and improving the coordination of care through a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach. “The leadership of Desert Valley Hospital is committed to and believes in continuous quality of care and performance improvement as the foundation for preserving and enhancing healthcare delivery,” continued Hunter. “These quality initiatives are achieved through regular monitoring and reporting and developing action plans to improve measures that fall below expected performance.”

“Given the variation in quality care across the nation, it’s never been more important for consumers to do their homework when searching for a hospital,” said Brad Bowman, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “Those hospitals that have received Healthgrades 2017 Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence award have proven their long-standing commitment to providing quality care to drive better health outcomes for their patients.”

“Desert Valley Hospital is committed to providing the best quality of care to our community, and I am very proud of the caregivers who work every day to exceed expectations. We will never stop improving,” said Desert Valley Board Member Thurston Smith.

The 258 recipients of the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2017 study period (2013-2015), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 of the most common inpatient conditions and procedures —as measured by objective clinical outcomes performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
