Healthgrades presents Patient Safety Excellence Award™ to 21 Prime Healthcare hospitals

Prime Healthcare leads state of California with nine hospitals as Patient Safety Excellence Award™ recipients and is second most-awarded health system in the U.S. for 2024

(ONTARIO, Calif. – March 25, 2024) – Prime Healthcare hospitals were well-represented as Healthgrades unveiled its 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ recipients. Healthgrades annually recognizes the nation’s top-performing hospitals on the prevention of safety events among Medicare patients.

In total, 21 Prime Healthcare and Prime Healthcare Foundation hospitals received Patient Safety Excellence Awards™ this year.

“Prime Healthcare has cultivated an outstanding safety culture that prioritizes the well-being of both patients and staff, setting a high standard for patient safety nationwide,” said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer and head of data science at Healthgrades. “We’re proud to recognize these Prime Healthcare hospitals for providing top-quality care while preventing serious injuries to patients during their hospital stay.”

Nine of those hospitals are in California, representing the most award recipients by any health system in the state. Overall, of the 21 Prime Healthcare hospitals receiving the honor this year, 13 performed among the top five percent of all hospitals nationally, with eight in the top 10 percent of ranked organizations. Additionally, five Prime Healthcare hospitals marked their 11th-consecutive year as a Patient Safety Excellence Award™ recipient, with California’s Centinela Hospital Medical Center, La Palma Intercommunity Hospital, Paradise Valley Hospital, Sherman Oaks Hospital and West Anaheim Medical Center earning recognition from 2014 to present.

“Along with providing exceptional care and creating quality outcomes for our patients, safety is at the heart of our mission,” said Ahmad Imran, Prime Healthcare Vice President of Quality and Value-Based Care. “We are so proud of our clinicians and caregivers who create a culture of safety every day across our hospitals. These awards are a testament to their hard work and dedication. We are also pleased to see so many of our hospitals continually achieve excellence in safety across a great number of years.”

Under Prime Healthcare’s stewardship, three member hospitals also received Patient Safety Excellence Awards™ for the first time in 2024, including Coshocton Regional Medical Center (OH), St. Francis Medical Center (CA) and St. Joseph Medical Center (MO).

“With safety, we also prioritize continuous improvement at Centinela Hospital,” said Mohammad A. Naser, Chief Executive Officer of Centinela Hospital Medical Center, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. “Receiving this validation from a top-ranked, external rating agency reaffirms our commitment to deliver top quality care and our constant striving toward a zero harm goal. As we continue fostering a culture of safety in our hospital, this award is a tremendous opportunity to reflect on the progress our team has made and strives to achieve continuously.”

Prime hospitals prioritize patient safety through a variety of initiatives and programs. The Prime Healthcare member hospitals that were recognized with Patient Safety Excellence Awards™ showcased high composite patient safety scores across a number of measures, including:

  • No foreign objects left during surgery or procedure
  • No pressure sores or bed sores acquired in hospitals
  • No deep blood clots in the lungs or legs during surgical stays
  • No excessive bruising or bleeding as a consequence of a procedure or surgery
  • No accidental cuts or punctures resulting from a procedure of the abdominopelvic region

In addition to the Patient Safety Excellence Award™ acclaims, Prime Healthcare hospitals also earned “America’s 50 Best” and “America’s 100 Best” distinctions from Healthgrades across a number of surgical and specialty categories in 2024.

Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates for approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide to determine this year’s top-performing hospitals for patient safety. During the 2020-2022 study period, nearly 170,000 potentially preventable safety events occurred among Medicare patients in U.S. hospitals, with four patient safety indicators accounting for close to 75% of these incidents.* Healthgrades’ analysis revealed that patients treated in hospitals receiving the 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award have a significantly lower chance of experiencing one of the four leading safety indicators than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals:

  • In-hospital fall resulting in fracture (approximately 52% less likely)
  • Collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest (approximately 56% less likely)
  • Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital (approximately 67% less likely)
  • Catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital (approximately 71% less likely)

*Statistics are calculated from Healthgrades Patient Safety Ratings and Excellence Award methodology which is based primarily on AHRQ technical specifications (Version 2023.0.1) to MedPAR data from approximately 4,500 hospitals for years 2020 through 2022 and represent three-year estimates for Medicare patients only.
